With Survivor Series looming I thought it would be a good idea for this Retro Review to be about the first ever Survivor Series. While there has been many huge moments over the years at this show I wanted to go back and take a look at the first ever instalment of Survivor Series. Every match on the card was a Elimination Tag Match. I have missed this sought of Survivor Series and would love to see this format bought back today. The first Match was a perfect way to kick off the show as the baby face team looked a lot stronger on paper and they dominated the majority of the contest. The recently crowned Intercontinental Champion, Honky Tonk Man put on a great performance and his feud with Savage was fuelled even more with the outcome of this match. Savage, Steamboat and Roberts dominated the match and eliminated everyone until Honky was left alone and in true heel fashion he walked away from the fight. But the most over guy in this match was not Savage or Honky or Steamboat it was Jake Roberts. The moment he got in the ring the fans lit up and began chanting DDT, then when he finally hit one the whole arena exploded. One match that I believe on this card that will be better than the one they are having this year is the Women’s Match. I recommend you go watch it and then compare it to what the women are doing today it is an eye opening experience. Leilani Kai, The Fabulous Mullah, Sensational Sherri and The Jumping Bomb Angels were all amazing in this match and I would say this is the best ever Women’s Survivor Series Match Of all time and the women who are competing this weekend should go back and check out what they have to try and live up too. One thing I loved about this Era was the depth of the tag team division. The 10 Man Elimination Tag Match with some of the best teams in history was another match I really enjoyed as I am a big fan of tag teams and this match did not disappoint. The Hart Foundation, Demolition, Strike Force and The British Bulldogs were the four teams that seemed to be the teams that may be the ones to shine in this contest but it was not to be as they were all eliminated and the one team that really made an impact was The Young Stallions (Paul Roma and Jim Powers), they took a lot of punishment in this match but they were able to Survive along with the very impressive Killer Bees. The odds did seem quite stacked against Hogan in the main event as Andre’s team was far the larger combination. This was a factor as it came down to Hogan and Bam Bam vs Andre, The Gang and Bundy. Hogan was counted out after brawling with Bundy and Gang on the outside which was the big shocker of the night. But the other shocker was the performance of Bigelow who then went on to eliminate King Kong Bundy and The One Man Gang. However when it finally came down to Bam Bam and Andre it did not take The Giant long to finish the contest.
