With the main event of this years Wrestlemania being a women’s triple threat match. I thought who better to do an interview with than someone who was the Champion at the very first Wrestlemania in one of the biggest stories on the show and also fought for the title at Wrestlemania 10. She is with out a doubt a legend of wrestling. I am positive all three women in the main event at Mania would agree. Leilani Kai and others paved the way for what Women’s Wrestling is today.
UWR: What is your earliest memory of Pro Wrestling
Kai: Ft Meyers, Florida. I went and saw wrestling for the first time. Sherri Lee vs Bonnie Watson wrestled and I was hooked. That was in 1974.
UWR: Where did you train and who trained you to be a Pro Wrestler ?
Kai: Ann Casey and Susan Green picked me up in Augusta, Georgia and took me to Fabulous Moohlahs school of Pro Wrestling. I learned from all the girls. We traveled, wrestled and all taught each other.
UWR: Were your family and friends supportive of your Pro Wrestling career ?
Kai: Some friends and one brother did. My sisters arent really wrestling fans and would have preferred that I went to college. My brother Shawn was all for it.
UWR: I’m sure like every Pro Wrestler you remember your first match. So who was it against and what do you remember most about it ?
Kai: It was in Alaska. I had been training at Moohlahs for two weeks. A girl had came the same day as myself. Her name was Shelia Sheppard. They need two girls to go to Alaska and work one match. We had to stay 6 weeks. We wrestled and each other and Moohlah said it was good enough for Alaska. The promoter of the event was a lady. She also refereed our match. She took us on a tour to The North Pole. We saw Santa, Miss, Clause, The Elfs and more. It stayed daylight most of the time.
UWR: What is the best match you have ever seen ?
Kai: Steve Regal vs anyone! He is a technical genius. I admire his wrestling.
UWR: Do you have a favourite match, feud or someone you really enjoyed working with ?
Kai: I loved working with anyone who came from Moohlahs stable. We were all a family and took care of each other. Later in my career, I was blessed to work with Madusa, Mickie James, Sara Del Rey and Tatevik Hunanyan. All special talents in the sport
UWR: What is your proudest moment from your time as a Pro Wrestler ?
Kai: My induction to The Pro Wrestling Hall Of Fame in Texas. It was real exciting and I spoke from my heart. Johnny Mantel and his wife “K” do a great job. It was the night of my life.
UWR: If you could have a match with a current female wrestler who would it be ?
Kai: I’d say Bailey. I’m such a heel and she’s such a babyface. I think it would be good.
UWR: What do you think of how Women’s Wrestling has evolved ?
Kai: I think current day ladies wrestling is great. I respect and support any lady who steps threw the ropes. I encourage them all to work hard and never quit.
UWR: What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a Pro Wrestler ?
Kai: Get health insurance because it wont be handed to you. Your going to need it.
